Is there anyone who hasn’t looked at a photo of the iconic overwater bungalows in Tahiti or Bora Bora with a sigh and thought, ‘One day?’ Now thanks to Karisma Hotels & Resorts,  that day could happen much closer to home.

The hotel chain has just opened gorgeous overwater luxury villas to Mexico’s Riviera Maya. At the adults-only Dorado Maroma, there will be 30 private “palafitos,” or bungalows, with more to follow in a second stage of construction. Sandals Resorts will also be opening similar style accommodations  at the Sandals Royal Caribbean resort in Jamaica this November.

Each palafito  at Maroma gives guests a 360-degree view of the the crystal clear, turquoise ocean with glass bottom floors and a ladder to climb back up after you’ve jumped off the oversized front porch into the sea. If the view alone isn’t enough of a selling point, there is also outdoor “Aguas del Amor” showers, private infinity pools, indoor Jacuzzis, 24-hour room service, luxury beach beds, and even a full butler service on demand.

The open air design isn’t restricted to the private cabins. The gourmet Ocean Grill & Wine bar will also sit over the water with glass floors and private dining rooms, and the Naay Spa will have four suites and allow you to gaze into the sea below while being massaged or getting a specialized treatment based on Mayan herbal practices. Local Maroma sea moss is used in one treatment guaranteed to relax and renew.

When you are ready for a little time back on land, it’s an easy retreat to Maroma Beach, voted one of the 10 best beaches in the world. A private picnic there can also be arranged by the hotel, or there are simple gourmet bites if you want something light to nosh on. The hotel will even bring you complimentary sunscreen should you need it! Guests have access to three pools, six restaurants, and four bars. There are also plenty of activities to enjoy, including volleyball, kayaking, bocce, and yoga, dancing, and cooking classes.

“These are the first and only over-the-water offerings in all of Mexico, eliciting a one-of-a-kind experience for travelers seeking the ultimate luxury getaway whether it’s to celebrate a honeymoon, birthday, anniversary, or for no reason at all but to become immersed in nature and be pampered with the finest hospitality. It is an unforgettable must-visit destination,” says Armando Chomat, executive vice president of Premier Worldwide Marketing, the exclusive worldwide representatives for Karisma Hotels & Resorts. “El Dorado Maroma’s Palafitos – Overwater Bungalows are the most exquisite and unique suites in the entire region, with the ocean and renowned Maroma Beach literally at your fingertips.”

Of course all that luxury comes at a price with rates running between $1500 to $4500 a night.

  1. Great post. Perfect timing too. At the exact moment this post appeared in my email, I was watching a Phish concert on Youtube. I was daydreaming about the 4 day Phish concert in January 2017 that will be at Riviera Maya. I really would love to go, and even more now that I read this post.
